At New York fashion week Dior Homme ensured that while the Catwalk was dark, it was never dull. Out of the shadows of the recession came all black looks cruising down the runway with the elegance and style that is accustom to Dior. This adoration for black had consensus support, from Ann Demeulester to Z Zegna the catwalk was a blackout.

Kris Van Assche displayed once again his metier for fashion detail and ensured that Dior Homme was the black knight of fashion week. Presented for our discerning eyes was a collection of Futurist and Indiana Jones influence. Strong brimmed hats compliment a strong return to displays of milinery excellence this season and provided a strong contrast to flowing trousers and constrained jackets. This hybrid mix unified by a singular colour produces the streamlined silhouettes and clean lines expected of Dior. Assche continues to cement his style at Dior rejecting the hyper-slender proportions of the Slimane era. He introduces a fresh gust of air into the brand bringing lofty capes and billowing trousers to life.

The general palette is overall restrained opting for sullen tones of brown and grey to complement the black. Strong block reds add a splash of regal opulence, an unsubtle highlight to break up what could have been a cold unforgiving range. While falling short of the mix of colour and black seen at Burberry Prorsum the collection is a sultry success. A strong provision of sharp, dark, domineering shapes meet the demands of contemporary fashion consumers.
